Kandankari is a traditional Afghan wood carving technique known for its detailed geometric and floral patterns. This craft has been used for centuries to create wooden doors, windows, lattice screens, and interior architectural elements in mosques, homes, and historic buildings across Afghanistan especially in cities like Kabul and Herat. Made by hand using chisels and traditional joinery methods, Kandankari reflects the rich artistic heritage of Afghan Islamic architecture.
In this documentary, we filmed a Kandankari workshop in Kabul, operated by a young female artisan. The film captures the full process of wood carving, from raw material to finished design, showcasing the tools, patterns, and techniques used to preserve this unique form of Afghan craftsmanship.
