Animation for financial services exists because there is nothing to film. A guarantee, an export credit facility, a risk product: none of it has a physical form, and no amount of footage of people shaking hands in a lobby will explain any of it. Breef Sandwich brought us in to produce a series of animations for Saudi EXIM Bank.
The brief was the same every time. Take something a customer cannot see and make it followable in under two minutes.
What animation for financial services has to do
It has to carry a sequence. Money moves from here to there, a condition is met, a risk sits with one party rather than another. Those are relationships, not objects, and animation is the only medium that can draw a relationship and then move it.
The script decides everything
A beautiful animation explaining the wrong thing is wasted money. We lock the script first and read it aloud against a stopwatch, because changing a sentence costs nothing and changing a finished animated sequence costs a great deal.
A series has to look like a series
Across a run of films the viewer should recognise the second one instantly from the first. One colour palette, one way of drawing a person, one way of showing movement. We agree that look on still frames before anything is animated, and then we do not drift from it.
Arabic and English, planned from the start
Reading direction, on screen text and voiceover timing all change between the two. Building for both from the beginning costs a fraction of retrofitting a second language into finished films, which is a lesson most people learn once.
“Money moving between parties is a relationship, not an object. Only animation can draw it.”
